  • Crestview Knights Varsity Girls Volleyball Win on Senior Night.

A group of six people standing on a volleyball court, including two players in uniform, flanked by coaches and supporters, during a recognition event.

After 3 straight games on the road, the Lady Knights were back at home, one last time this season. That means, it’s Senior Night.

There are only 2 seniors, on a young team this season, as #3 Kaci Gregory and #19 Lainey Gardner were honored before the game.

I was sitting with the rest of the team on the floor, for the pregame activities. While most of the girls held it together, there was one who could not.

Afterwards, the Lady Knights had a tall (they were outsized) task ahead of them.

The 14-6 Ottoville Big Green were in at The Ray, and looking to play spoiler.

A volleyball team huddled together on the court, listening attentively to their coach, who is giving instructions. The players are wearing white jerseys with blue accents, and there are visible court markings in the background.

The Lady Knights would get the first 2 points. Ottoville would respond to make it 2-2. The teams would trade points back and forth, to an 8-8 game. They’d then trade 2 point streaks, and again, be tied at 12-12. The Lady Knights would score 5 straight, and force Ottoville head coach Alexis Lautzenheiser to call a timeout, down 17-12.

The Big Green would respond by winning 6 of the next 9 points, getting the score to 20-18. This time forcing Crestview head coach Tammy Gregory to call a timeout. The Lady Knights would end up winning the first set 25-21.

Lady Knights 1st set winning point.

The Big Green would capitalize on communication mistakes by the Lady Knights, and quickly go up 3-0. A looooooooooong rally, showing off incredible athleticism and stamina, as players from both teams were diving and getting hard digs, ultimately, the Big Green would win the hard-earned point, and give Ottoville a 4-0 lead. Crestview would respond by winning the next 4 straight points, and tying the game up.

They would go back and forth to an 8-8 game. They’d trade 2-point streaks, and it would be 12-12 now. Ottoville would win 5 of the next 7 points, making the score 17-14 and cause a Crestview timeout. The Lady Knights would make a smally rally, getting it to a 21-19 game, before an Ottoville timeout. In the end though, the Big Green would win a hard-earned 2nd set 25-23.

An ACE on the serve, by #15 Kinley Crider in a hard fought 2nd set.

The Lady Knights would get out to a fast start in the 3rd set. They’d get out to a 10-4 lead. The ensuing Big Green timeout, did nothing to stop the momentum though. Crestview would be up 16-8. Lady Knights head coach Tammy Gregory would call a timeout, after a 3rd straight Big Green point, made it 16-11.

This was a different timeout though. It wasn’t to “stop momentum”. It was a coaching timeout. She was NOT happy with something that happened on that 27th point of the set.

The girls responded and took the lead to 22-15, forcing a Big Green timeout. As in the 1st set, it would be for naught, as the Lady Knights would win the 3rd set 25-21, and go up 2-1 in the match.

The game winning point for the Lady Knights, in the 3rd set.

Crestview would start the 4th set hot, jumping out to an 8-3 lead. Ottoville would be forced to call a timeout, down 12-5. It would work, as the Big Green would win 7 of the next 10 points, and forcing a Crestview timeout, up 15-12.

Big Green #4 Jenna Suever would score an ACE immediately after the timeout, leading a 3-point streak, that would tie the game at 15-15. The Lady Knights responded with 4 straight points. Not to be outdone, Ottoville answered right back with 4 straight of their own. It was now a 19-19 game.

Ottoville scored the next point and went up 20-19. Coach Gregory had to use her final timeout.

The timeout worked, as the Lady Knights would win 4 of the next 5 points, and take a 23-21 lead, forcing Coach Lautzenheiser to call her final timeout as well.

The Lady Knights would put the Big Green away, winning the 4th set 25-23, and winning the match 3 sets to 1.

The 4th set and matching winning point for the Crestview Lady Knights on Senior Night.

After the game I spoke to Crestview Lady Knights head coach Tammy Gregory.

It was a big win on Senior Night, but Ottoville didn’t make it easy, as it was a very competitive game.

“We knew that coming in, Kaci knows a lot of the girls very well, and is good friends with them from club volleyball, we knew it was going to be tough.”

Ottoville played a power style game, and it left the Lady Knights scrambling at times.

“We have the mindset, that every ball is coming to you. You want to have that confidence that you’re going to be able to handle whatever comes your way.”

With the regular season drawing to a close, and tournament time coming up; I asked Coach Gregory, what she thinks the team needs to improve on, to “make that tournament run?”

“We need to be more consistent. We are the team that scores a lot of points, and then gives up a lot of points. It’s just the consistency. We need to do better, and we can do better. I believe in these girls.”

I tried 10 times to download a picture here, but the “tech team” at WordPress couldn’t figure out why it kept turning sideways. I got tired of their excuses and moved on.

  • Crestview Knights Get Rolled by the State Ranked Bluffton Pirates on Senior Night.

A group photo on a football field, featuring a team of players in blue uniforms standing in the center, surrounded by supporters wearing red and blue attire. The scene is set during sunset with trees in the background.

The sun was starting its’ descent in the small town of Convoy, Ohio. A horizontal streak of orange lay across the top of the school to the west. The air was choked with the smell of burgers and brats, that assaulted your nose, and made your mouth water, as the Knights Pride Club had another fund raiser for the student-athletes.

The slight breeze and the warmth, shone brightly onto the football field. The stadium filled with children running and laughing. On the grass of the gridiron, parents stood with their kids, talking and reminiscing about treasured memories, as they were introduced and celebrated, one last time, as it was Senior Night,

Knights OT/DE Senior Will Sheets carries the sledgehammer out on Senior Night.

Unfortunately for the Knights, the pregame festivities would be as good as it was to be on this night.

Just 56 seconds into the game, Pirates HB Parker Lovell would score his 1st of 4 touchdowns in the game from 4 yards out. He’d run another in from 3 yards out, and QB Tayte Giesige would hit WR Blayne Hill on a 40 yard TD pass, to put the #7th ranked Pirates up 21-0 after the 1st quarter.

Bluffton Pirates HB Parker Lovell scoring his 2nd of 4 TDs of the game.

The Pirates would jump out to a massive 34 – 0 lead, behind a fast and physical defense. Crestview’s offensive line, just didn’t seem to have an answer for the blitz packages, as I heard multiple players tell the coaches.

The Knights would finally get on the board with a 32 yard TD pass from Cash Hammons to Beau Lichtensteiger, with :34 seconds left in the 1st half. The PAT (point after touchdown) was blocked, but at least they didn’t get shutout, and were on the board 34-6. They’d end the first half on a high note. Not just with the TD, but the final play was a much need QB sack, by DL #55 Kale Lichtensteiger and DL #1 Beckam Putman.

Knights QB Cash Hammons finds Beau Lichtensteiger on this 32 yard TD pass.

That momentum would carry over into the 2nd half. The Knights received the kickoff. They’d get a Pirates 15 yard facemask penalty on a 2nd and 6. They’d connect on a 33 yard pass on a 3rd and 11. Once again, they’d hit another big pass, this time for 29 yards.

A 3 yard run, followed by an 11 yard pass, would get them down to them a 1st and Goal from the 7 yardline.

QB Cash Hammons would scamper in for another Knights TD. They’d miss the 2 point attempt was no good, but it was now a 34-12 game, with 9:21 left in the 3rd quarter.

Knights QB Cash Hammons runs for a 7 yard TD.

The Bluffton Pirates are the #7th ranked in Division 5 for a reason. They would immediately squash all that momentum by the Knights, by scoring 2 TDs in a matter of 4 minutes.

QB Giesige would hit WR Blayne Hill for their 2nd TD of the night, this time from 52 yards out. Lovells’ final TD of the game (4 yard run) and it was 49 – 12 to end the 3rd quarter, as well as the final score of the game.

Bluffton Pirates HB Parker Lovell, scores the final points of the game, on this 4 yard TD run.

Knights Junior QB Cash Hammons went 16 of 28 for 168 yards, with 1 passing TD, and 1 INT (which was an uncalled DPI), and had 13 carries for 33 yards and 1 TD.

Freshman WR Beau Lichtensteiger had 10 catches for 115 yards and 1 TD.

4 different Knights, led the team with 5 total tackles.

I spoke to Knights head coach Cole Harting after the game.

High school football team kneeling on the sidelines during sunset, with a crowd in the background and a marching band visible on the field.

“Well, we wanted to come in and limit their big plays. Make them earn every drive. Unfortunately, at the beginning they got some easy ones and had a few short drives. We’ve got to do a better job tackling and making those type of plays, when we have the opportunity to do so.”

I asked him, what positives he and the staff could take away from this loss?

“A big positive is that Cash came in and gave us a lot of really good stuff back there at quarterback. He showed a surprising ability to come in and command the offense.”

I asked Coach Harting about Hammons ability to run, and how it limited the Pirates ability to blitz in the 2nd half.

“Absolutely. Cash brings some size and playmaking ability to extend plays, that we didn’t have before. He did a really good job of keeping his eyes downfield. These were his very first snaps he’s ever played at quarterback in a live game. We’re very proud of the way he played tonight.

The defense was able to bat a few balls out of the air. Which was something that I rarely saw this season, covering the Knights.

“We’re blessed to have 2 defensive ends with really good size at 6’5″. They were able to get their hands up and if those passes aren’t up, they’re going to be able to effect those throwing lanes.”

The Knights are now 2-6 overall, and 2-3 in the Northwest Conference.

They play their final home game of the season, next Friday against state ranked Columbus Grove, at 7:00 PM (EST).

  • Crestview Lady Knights Get Their 5th Straight Win Over LCC.

A volleyball team huddled together on the court, discussing strategy. The players are wearing black and white uniforms with knee pads, showing a mix of engagement and focus.

After playing most of the season in the Elementary/Middle School gymnasium, the Crestview Lady Knights, finally got to play on their newly renovated home court.

The Lady Thunderbirds would get the first point of the game. LCC would win the 13th point, on a long rally between the two teams. They would trade points back-and-forth, all the way to an 8-8 tie. LCC would go up briefly 9-8, before the Lady Knights would score 6 straight points to take a 14-9 lead, and force a Thunderbirds timeout. It would all be for naught, as the Knights would dominate the first set, winning 25-12.

Crestview would get the first point of the second set. Like in the first set, the teams would trade points. The Lady Thunderbirds would take a 6-5 lead, and would keep the lead for most of the set. Crestview head coach Tammy Gregory would call a timeout, after losing the 23rd point of the match, down 13-10.

The Lady Knights would take the lead at 14-13. LCC would retake the lead, getting it to 20-18. Crestview would score 2 points, and force a LCC timeout. Like in the first set, it wouldn’t work out for the Lady Thunderbirds, as the Lady Knights would win a hard fought second set, 25-22.

The Lady Knights would get out to a fast start in the third set, jumping to a 4-1. The Lady Thunderbirds would fight back and get it to a 6-6 tie. Crestview would take an 8-6 lead, before the teams trade single points back-and-forth, all the way to a 11-10 game. The Lady Knights would score 4 straight points getting it to 15-10.

They’d get it to 19-14, and once again, the Lady Thunderbirds would fight back, and take a 20-19 lead. That would force a Crestview timeout. The Lady Knights would take the lead, and never relent, winning the third set 25-23, and sweeping the match 3-0.

After the game, I asked Lady Knights Head Coach Tammy Gregory about their 5 game winning, and how they’ve kept this energy up, after playing 3 games this week alone.

“Yeah, it’s a quick turnaround, but the girls know what it takes, and they’re gonna keep battling. We’re back at it Saturday, and we know what we face Saturday is gonna be completely different from what we’ve seen this week. The tempo and the level of play. It’s gonna open our eyes, and it could be a long Saturday. We love the competition, and it’s gonna make us better down the road.”

I asked her with the regular season coming to an end this month, what does she, the staff, and the girls, need to do, to keep this momentum going.

“First off, we need to stay healthy. With the change in the weather, we have a couple girls actually dealing with illnesses. We also need to just focus on the little things, and the basics. We can never get enough practice serving. All those fundamental things, the comeback, the backcheck, we know that we gotta be stronger in every area on the board.”

I noticed that in the first 2 sets, nobody was on the backline. In the third set, there was. I asked if that in-game adjustment was her call.

“No. A lot of their balls were going long, and the girls read the hitter.”

  • Crestview Lady Knights Varsity Volleyball, Win Third Straight Game

A volleyball team huddles together in a gymnasium, wearing matching uniforms while preparing for the game, with spectators seated in the background.

For the 2nd time is 24 hours, the Crestview Lady Knights were back on the floor. This time taking on the Delphos Jefferson Wildcats, in Northwest Conference Action.

Just like Monday night, the Lady Knights got off to a fast start in the first set, scoring the first 6 straight points. The Lady Cats would get their third point on a long rally, and that would start a 5 point streak for the, getting the set to 8-9.

Again, the team would trade point and mini runs, getting the score to a 13-13 tie. Crestview Head Coach Tammy Gregory would call a timeout with Jefferson up 15-14. They’d win 2 straight coming out of the TO. They’d continue trading, until finally, the Lady Knights would win a very competitive first set, 25-22.

The 2nd set was like looking in a mirror. The Lady Knights jumped out to a STRONG start, forcing the Lady Cats to call a timeout down 9-2 quickly. Jefferson would get it to 12-7, before Crestview would win a long rally, that had a lot of saves and digs, to go up 13-7.

It was pure domination by the Lady Knights from that point on, winning the 2nd set by a score of 25-13.

The Lady Knights would get the first point of the 3rd set, BUT, the Lady Cats, were not going to let them get off to another hot start. Jefferson would take the lead early, at 3-1. They’d trade back and forth, before the Lady Cats would score 3 straight points and going up 9-5. That mini-run would force Knights Head Coach Tammy Gregory to call an early timeout.

As she talked to her players, all eyes were focused on her. I don’t think any of the players actually blinked, as I watched and listened.

The timeout worked like gangbusters. It stopped the Lady Cats momentum C-O-L-D, as the Lady Knights would win the next 7 straight points to take a 12-9 lead.

Crestview #3 Kaci Gregory would make an incredible, one handed, diving save on the 28th point, that the Lady Knights would end up winning and going up 16-12. She is so fun to watch. More on her later.

Jefferson would call a timeout down 19-15. The Lady Cats would not go quietly. They’d get it as close as 21-18, but the Lady Knights would get the final 3 points and win the 3rd set 25-18, sweeping the match 3-0.

I spoke with Crestview Lady Knights Head Coach after the match.

I asked her about the teams 3 game winning streak.

“I’m happy. It feels good. Our girls feel good. You know, we’re playing different styles of volleyball. We played a lot of MAC opponents early, and they just come and hit at you. In our conference, it’s all different styles, so we just have to be prepared and play whatever style we need to play.”

Delaine Balliet has been on fire, serving the last 2 games. I asked Coach, if that was something she’s been working on.

“She’s definitely worked on it, and having to go up against our hitters everyday in practice, really helps with that.”

I asked Coach about Kaci Gregory, and her diving and the energy she brings to table, and what that means to the rest of the team.

“They feed off of her. They look at that and play harder for each other. She had three serving errors tonight, which is unlike her, but she went and made plays in other areas, and that shows leadership, and again, they feed off of that.”

The timeout in that 3rd set, was very timely. I asked Coach about that timeout.

“We had to squash that. As you know, volleyball is such a game of momentum, and they had the momentum, and we couldn’t let it get anymore out of hand. We had to get that momentum back on our side.”

A volleyball match conclusion, with players shaking hands at the net. The scoreboard shows a final score of 25-18. Teams in yellow and red/white uniforms are visible in a gymnasium setting.

A group of female volleyball players wearing blue and red uniforms is gathered in a huddle, showing enthusiasm and teamwork on the court.

The Crestview Lady Knights varsity volleyball team, took on their cross county rival, the Van Wert Cougars on Monday night.

The Lady Knights got out to a fast start in the first set, winning the first 7 points of the set, forcing the Cougars to call a timeout. It worked, as Van Wert would get 3 straight points. The momentum wouldn’t last, as it quickly got to 17-5, and win the first set 25-12.

The second set was another fast start for the Lady Knights at 5-1. The Cougars would battle back to get it to 6-5, before the Lady Knights would rattle 6 straight points, making it 12-5. The Cougars would sprinkle in a point here and there, but the Lady Knights would dominate the second set, winning 25-8.

The theme of the night was fast starts by the Lady Knights, as they got 8 straight points to open the third set. The Cougars would not go quietly though, as then responded with 6 straight points of their own, getting it to an 8-6 set. The two teams would trade points, small runs, long rallies, and a lot of digs.

  • Crestview Boys & Girls Cross Country Show Out at Ohio Health XC Invitational.

Five young athletes posing together in a grassy field after a track and field event, each wearing medals and team apparel, with a backdrop of spectators and trees.

It was a cold 48 degree, Saturday morning, in the small city of Van Wert, Ohio; that even the hot coffee in my thermos could barely conquer.

The air was heavy with a thick fog, that clung to it, like a blanket with an unwavering grip.

Hundreds of people were milling about the grounds, excitedly talking about the upcoming races.

A foggy scene featuring a grassy field with indistinct figures scattered across it, some people walking while others are seen in the background on a hilltop, partially obscured by mist.

    Which teams were the strongest?

Which runner was going to win?

Did they or the teams have a chance to make it to state? (yes, they were talking that far ahead) LOL.

The Ohio Health XC (cross country) Invitational was being held at the Van Wert Country Reservoirs and Hiestand Woods and Parks Preserve, right next to the hospital.

The high school girls’ race, kicked things off at 9:00 AM.

A cold, foggy start to the Ohio Health High School Cross Country Invitational.

Knights runner Emily Heth would get off to a quick start (as seen above), but would fade a bit throughout the race. She would finish in 18th place with a time of 21:35.3.

Lydia Grace 30th place and Jetta Merkle 84th place, would both run new personal records of 22:20.3 and 26:47.5.

The Crestview Lady Knights would end up finishing 8th out of 12 teams that participated.

At 10:10-ish AM, the high school boys race started, and that is when Crestview history was made.

Knights’ runner Derek Young sets a brand new school record of 15:45.9, to win 1st place.

The boys team got off to a fast start, and they were able to hold serve.

Derek Young dominated from the opening shot, and never looked back, as he absolutely smoked the field (see above video, nobody behind him), with a new school record.

Newly crowned homecoming king, Kale Vining, finished 10th with a time of 17:17.

After Kale, 4 Knight runners group together to finish 20th, 22nd, 27th, and 29th, in Hudson Perrott(17:39.5), Andy Heth(17:46.2), Caleb Thomas(17:56.9), and Luke Sawmiller(18:08.8).

4 Knight boys also set new personal records as well.

    Hunter Waltmire(19:28.9)
    Cole Miller(19:57.4)
    Evan Knueve (21:21.2)
    Carter Perkins(24:03.2)

The boys team finished 2nd out of 14 participating teams.

  • Crestview Knights Varsity Football Loses on Homecoming Weekend.

A group of students standing on a football field, dressed in formal attire for homecoming, with a football and bouquets in their hands. The backdrop includes spectators in the stands, trees, and a cloudy sky.

Alison Owens and Kale Vining were crowned as Homecoming King and Queen at Friday nights football game.

The small town of Convoy, Ohio had been abuzz all week long. It was homecoming week at Crestview Local Schools.

Spirit Week had kids and teachers dressing in their PJs, Whiteout Wednesday, dressing up as their favorite hero or villain, and then the home colors last night.

The smell of Friday night popcorn and pizza from Cheers and Gears Bar & Grille filled the air, as people milled about and talked at the concession stand.

As the Knights football took to the field, the kids and the home crowd were hyped up and ready.

A packed grandstand at a high school football game, with fans in various attire and a vibrant sky in the background. Cheerleaders are on the field, and players walk nearby.

Unfortunately, that would be as good as it would get for the Knights, as they would lose to the visiting Allen East Mustangs 41-0.

The Knights would bobble the opening kickoff but recover. They’d drive down the field, all the way to the 11 yardline. They’d get a holding penalty on 4th down. They’d miss the field goal with 6:05 left in the game.

The Mustangs immediately responded with a 38 yard TD run by HB Miles McDorman, to end the 1st quarter with a 7-0 led.

Allen East would get another TD from McDorman from 30 yards, then QB Keagan Jones would find WR Cam Smith for 2 TDs in the second quarter, for 66 yards and 55 yards, and take a 27-0 lead into the locker room at the half.

In the third quarter, QB Keagan Jones would score on a 30 yard scramble, and a 2 yard run by McDorman.

Allen East HB Miles McDorman scores his 3rd touchdown of the day, on this 2 yard run.

McDorman would finish the game with 141 yards, on 15 carries with 3 TDs.

Knights Freshman QB Calin Balliet went 14-21 for 75 yards, but threw 3 INTs. One of which, was an absolutely TERRIBLE missed DPI (defensive pass interference) by the side judge.

I spoke with Knights Head Coach Cole Harting after the game.

“We operated really well on that opening drive, until we got into the redzone. That penalty backed us up and we weren’t able to finish that. Scott kicked well in practice, so we decided to give him a shot. We missed, and from that point on, we couldn’t a get stop when we needed it. Couldn’t get a first down, when we needed it. We got to do a better job of executing the little things. We just got to get better at that, and if not, it’s going to be a long rest of the season.”

  • Crestview Girls Varsity Volleyball Get Big Win on Homecoming Week.

A group of young female volleyball players huddled together on a court, wearing matching white uniforms with blue accents, engaged in a team discussion.

It’s homecoming week for the students at Crestview High School in the small town of Convoy, Ohio.

You opened the door to the school, and you could hear and see the excitement. The students singing and dancing. Elementary kids running around talking with their friends, while their parents were up in the stands. The smell of popcorn and pizza from the local bar, filled the gymnasium.

The Knights (4-5) girls varsity volleyball team was playing in front of a home crowd, for the first time in 10 days (4 games), taking on the Bluffton Pirates (10-5), in a Northwest Conference action.

The first set was a back and forth affair, with both teams trading points and streaks. The Knights would go up 10-9 on a long rally by both teams, with lots of digs and blocks. The Pirates would call a timeout down 12-9. They’d go on a small run, and get the set to 17-16, before forcing the Knights to call a timeout. A Crestview ace, would make it 21-18, and the Pirates would use their last timeout. It would be to no avail, as the Lady Knights would win the first set 25-20.

A volleyball match in a gymnasium, featuring players in action with a net in the center and spectators on the benches in the background.

The Lady Knights would start out the 2nd set hot, winning the first 4 points. The Lady Pirates would get on the board after a long rally to make it 4-1. They’d come back and tie it at 5-5. Crestview would get it to 10-7, but again, Bluffton came back to tie it at 10-10. Crestview would call a timeout with the game tied at 18-18, after Bluffton got 4 of 5 points. They’d trade point back and forth, getting it to 22-22. Crestview would score 2 straight, to make it 24-22. A Bluffton timeout would get them a point at 24-23, but the Lady Knights would close it out, winning a hard fought 2nd set 25-23.

A high school volleyball game in action, featuring a player in mid-jump preparing to hit the ball over the net, while opposing players attempt to block the shot.

The Lady Pirates however, would not go out quietly. They quickly got out to a 8-3 lead, forcing Knights head coach Tammy Gregory to call an early timeout. The break worked, as they’d get 4 of the next 5 points to make it 9-7. A Bluffton point, then Crestview rattled off 4 straight to take their first lead of the 3rd set 11-10.

As it was all game long, it would be back and forth. Both teams making hard digs and saves, trading points and short streaks. It was a 17-17 game, when the Lady Pirates would score 3 straight points to make it 20-17. That would force the Knights to use their final timeout of the set.

Once again, that timeout stopped all the momentum C-O-L-D, as the Crestview Lady Knights would score 7 straight points, and win the 3rd set 25-20, and the match with a 3-0 sweep.

I spoke with Crestview Lady Knights Head Coach Tammy Gregory after the game.

“There was so much on the line. We knew that Bluffton would be at the top of the conference at the start of the year, and knew that we could not overlook anybody. I’m so proud of the girls and how they played tonight.”

I noticed that the Knights had a player, all the way at the back line. That was something I hadn’t seen them do so far this season. I asked Coach Gregory, if that was specific for this game, or would that be a season long change.

“They’re not a team that’s going to tip a lot, so we were able to move our defense around a bit more. We wanted to make sure that we protected that out of bounds line.”

  • Crestview Knights Loses to Rival Wayne Trace.

It was a hot, muggy, September afternoon, in the small town of Convoy, Ohio. Home of the Crestview Knights.

The humidity hug over the town, like a wet blanket. The Local Slice was selling their delicious pizza. You could smell the popcorn as you entered the gate. There was even a small trailer selling fruits.

It was Military Appreciation Night. Before the game, the packed crowd, applauded and paid tribute to those who served our country in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Space Force.

It was also a rivalry game, as they took on their neighbors to the north, the Wayne Trace Raiders.

Crestview Knights running out onto the field.

The Knights won the kickoff and elected to receive. They would fumble it and start at the 19 yard line. That would be a foreshadowing of the game. Knights QB Cooper Miller would pick up for 13 yards, and complete a 16 yard pass. Those would be the highlights before punting away.

Wayne Trace would go three and out on their first possession. Crestview would return the punt for a TD, however, it was called back for an illegal blindside block penalty (that I did not see), and they’d start at the 41 yard line.

The Knights would get a holding penalty on the next play, negating a 9 yard gain, making it 1 and 20 from the 49. Wayne Trace #0 would get called for holding on back-to-back plays, giving Crestview a first down. They’d do nothing on the drive, and end up turning it over on downs.

Wayne Trace would take over at the 6 yard line. They’d use a timeout with 2:06 left in the first quarter. They’d fumble the snap on first down, run for 2 yards on second down, and throw an incomplete pass on 3rd down. Raiders P Reece Morehead inadvertently stepped out of the back of the endzone, giving the Knights a 2-0 lead. That would basically be it for the first quarter.

Crestview would open the 2nd quarter with a 41 yard pass, giving them 1st and Goal at the 5. Runs of 2, 1, and 1, quickly made it 4th and Goal. The Raiders defense would step up and get the stop, causing another turnover on downs.

Wayne Trace would get runs of 5, 3, and 5, before a Raiders pass was tipped at the line, but was still caught and for 7 yards. Runs of 9 and 5 yards, then Crestview would get a boneheaded 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which had Knights Assistant Coach Jake Harmon, absolutely livid on the sideline (understandably so). They now had a 1st and 10 at the 48. Incomplete pass, 1 yard run, and a 6 yard run, had them at 4th and 3. They’d pop off a 16 yard run, use their 2nd timeout with 4:15 left in the first half.

The Knights would get a 4 yard TFL (tackle for loss), then get called for a 15 yard personal foul facemask penalty. Raiders QB Reece Morehead would throw 12 yard TD pass to WR Easton Jay. The would fake the extra point, and convert the 2 point try, giving them an 8-2 lead with 2:40 left in the 1st half.

Wayne Trace would use their final timeout before the 1st down snap. The Knights would hit a 13 yard pass on 2nd down, to the 41. A 9 yard pass on first, then back-to-back incompletions had it 4th and 1. The Raiders would get called for DPI (defensive pass interference), and the Knights had another 1st down on the 35. 2 straight completions quickly had them down to the 6 yard line.

Crestview QB Cooper Miller would hit WR Beau Lichtensteiger for a 6 yard TD. PAT was good, and the Knights had 9-8 lead with 1:08 left in the half.

The Raiders would hit a 42 yard pass on 2nd down. That momentum would be quickly shut down, as Knights DB Hayden Waltmire would intercept the pass and return it 60 yards for a Crestview touchdown. PAT was no good. The Knights would take a 15-8 lead into the half.

The Raiders would get the 2nd half kickoff, and would quickly get to 4th and 3. They would attempt a fake punt, but would come up short, giving the Knights the ball at the 37 yard line. A 17 yard pass on first down. 3 straight incompletions, including a drop on 4th down, and Crestview had yet another, turnover on downs.

Wayne Trace would get a run of 6, pass of 5, run of 3, run of 2 yards. A high snap, would lead to an athletic QB scramble for 9 yards. Knights DL Kale Litchensteiger and LB Evin Brincefield, would combine to get a sack on 1st down. On the very next play, DL Denver McDougall would get in on the sack party, for a 9 yard loss. Raiders QB would run out of bounds at the 18 yard line. Wayne Trace would punt to the 42.

Crestview would start with a false start penalty. They’d get a holding penalty on the next play, but it’d be declined, giving them 2nd and 15. A 7 yard pass, then incompletion, and they’d punt it away to the 42.

The Raiders would start marching with runs of 6 yards, 5 yards, 7 yards, 5 yards, 2 yards, and 14 yards. 2 plays later, they’d run for an 8 yard TD. PAT was good, and it was now a 15-15 game with :20 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

CV QB Cooper Miller would be sacked by #50 for an 11 yard loss on the last play of the 3rd quarter.

The Knights would start the 4th quarter with a 12 yard pass, to make it 3rd and 9. The Raiders would call a timeout. It worked, as Crestview QB Cooper Miller would throw an INT to #14.

The Raiders would throw for 13 yards on 1st down, but then run for 0 yards, 6 yards, 1 yard, to make it 4th and 1. Knights LB Conner Hammons would block the pass attempt, and it’d be a turnover on downs.

Crestview, however, could not do anything with the ball, and quickly went three and out.

The first snap of the drive, the Raiders Carter Baumle would run a Bucks Sweep, for a 62 yard TD. The PAT was blocked. Wayne Trace now had a 21-15 lead with 7:41 left in the game.

The Knights would get the ball at the 35 yard line. The Raiders would get a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on first down. Crestview would score on a long TD pass the next play, however, the WR ran out of bounds on the route, which is a 15 yard penalty. It was now 1st and 25 from the 46.

They’d hit a 10 yard pass, but another 15 yard personal foul penalty by Wayne Trace, gave Crestview a 1st down at the 21 yard line. Incomplete pass, pass batted down, and incomplete pass, made it 4th and 10. They’d covert on a 12 yard pass. The Knights would score 2 plays later, on an HB Evin Brincefield 2 yard TD run. The PAT was fumbled, and no good. It was now a 21-21 game with 5:55 left in the game.

Wayne Trace would return the ensuing kickoff to the 39 yard line. They’d get a QB scramble for 12 yard to the 50. Then, they’d pop off a big 49 yard run to the 1 yard line. Carter Baumle would run it in for a TD on the next play. The PAT was good, and the Raiders now had a 28-21 lead with 4:54 left in the game.

The Knights start at the 32 yard line. Unfortunately, 4 straight incompletions and it was yet another, turnover on downs Crestview.

The Raiders would go right back to the well. On the first play of the drive, they’d run the Buck Sweep, and score Carter Baumle would score 3rd TD of the game, on a 35 yard run. The PAT was good, and it was now a 35-21 game with 3:55 left in the game.

That would be the final score, as the Knights couldn’t get anything going on the next drive, and the Raiders would kneel to end the game.

This is the 1st time the Wayne Trace Raiders have defeated Crestview in football, since 2013, and 1st time AT Crestview since 2008.

After the game, I asked Crestview Knights Head Coach Harting, about what positives he can takeaway from a tough loss to a rival.

“You know, I thought we did a nice job in the first half defensively. Especially ending the half on a positive note. Offense had a nice little 2 minute drill for the score, and our defense got a Pick 6, was a really great way to end the half. But we came out in the second half and didn’t execute very well. We gotta do better there.”

I asked him about the 2 TDs on the Bucks Sweep play, and the struggle to defend it.

“The Bucks Sweep is one of their best plays, and we knew that coming into the game. They did a nice job getting down blocks, and we kinda got over the top of it, and they cut it back on us, and that really killed us. We got to be better up front, and not allow those nice easy runs.”

I asked Coach about how it seems QB Cooper Miller gets in a better rhythm, when running the offense at a fast pace. Is that something they’re going to consider doing more often, as the season goes on.

“Yeah, we see. Right now we gotta really evaluate everything. He’ll go out and throw a nice ball, then throw 3 or 4 straight incompletions. He has to string more of those completions together if we wanna have a chance.”

The Knights are now 0-3 on the season. They take on the Spencerville Bearcats 0-3 to open up NWC play, next Friday night, September 11th.

  • Crestview Lady Knights Get Their First Win of the Season.

The Lady Knights were back at home to start the week, taking on the Minster Wildcats, in their 3rd straight non-conference matchup.

The teams would trade points back and forth, before the Lady Wildcats rattle off 5 straight points to make it 9-5. Both teams continued to trade points, and it would be an 11-11 tie game. 2 more even point plays, then Minster would go on another 5 point run to make it 18-13.

The Lady Knights would go on a massive rally, winning the next 9 straight points, and jump out to their first lead of the set, 22-18. The Lady Wildcats would answer back with 3 straight points, forcing Crestview head coach Tammy Gregory to call a timeout, holding onto a 1 point lead at 22-21.

The break worked out well for them, as they’d win the next 2 straight points, and win the first set 25-22.

The 2nd set would start out rough for the Lady Knights, as the Lady Wildcats jumped out leads of 7-2 and 10-4 before, once again, Crestview had to call a timeout. Points 9 and 10 for the Lady Wildcats came after the Lady Knights, committed back-to-back net infractions.

Minster would win the next point, with Crestview making a substitution. Crestview would bring it to 13-7, before a LONG rally between the teams, which had multiple digs and saves. The Lady Wildcats would win this point, and the fans from both teams applauded the efforts of the ladies.

Minster would get the score up to 17-11, before the Lady Knights would get rallies of 3 straight and 4 straight, to make it 19-18, and force the Lady Wildcats to call a timeout. Once again, the teams would trade points, as an ACE by the Knights would tie it up at 22-22, and Minster would call its final timeout. It would be for naught, as the Lady Knights would win the last 3 straight points and win the 2nd set 25-22.

The Lady Knights would start off the 3rd set with 3 straight points, forcing Minster to call an early timeout. The Lady Wildcats would score 2 straight coming out of the break.

The Lady Knights answered right back with 5 straight points of their own, making it a 9-2 lead. Both teams would trade points and small 2 point rallies, before Minster called their last timeout down 15-7.

The break would work for them, as they scored 4 straight points, forcing Crestview to call a timeout with a 15-7 lead. The Lady Wildcats would never recover, and they would eventually lose the 3rd and final set 25-18, for a straight sets victory.

It is the first win of the season for the Lady Knights, who are now 1-2.

After the game, I spoke to Crestview Lady Knights head Coach Tammy Gregory.

I asked her how she and the team felt, to finally get that first win of the season.

“It feels good. It was really good for our confidence. You look at our schedule, and we face a state ranked team in Coldwater on Tuesday, and we played with a lot of confidence tonight”.

I asked her about the rallies by both teams. What she says to the girls, when those momentum swings happen.

“We practice those a lot actually. we know there are a couple of rotations that we struggle with more than others. It’ll be the same thing with every team we face. We just got to practice, and we’ll get that trust, and it’ll pop, and come up looking great”.
